Drone Show in Matera 2026 for the Opening Ceremony of the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue
On March 20, 2026, at 9:30 p.m., 850 light-up drones soared into the sky above Matera in front of more than 5,000 spectators, bringing a historic opening ceremony to a close.

Matera: A Millennium-Old City Looking Toward the Future

Carved into the limestone of Basilicata and overlooking the Gravina Gorge, this cave city in southern Italy has been continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic era, making it one of the oldest human settlements in the world. Its Sassi, these neighborhoods of cave dwellings terraced along the rock face, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, were long synonymous with poverty and neglect before becoming one of the Old Continent’s most sought-after architectural gems.
Matera’s revival gained momentum in 2019, when the city was named European Capital of Culture for the first time, joining Plovdiv (Bulgaria) and Valletta (Malta). Since then, the city has shone with its museums, artist residencies, and international festivals, attracting many tourists each year.
In fact, Condé Nast Traveller magazine recently ranked Matera among the must-visit destinations of the year, definitively cementing its status as a world-class city.
This year, Matera has once again been named the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue, a title it shares with Tetouan, a city in northern Morocco. This is a symbolically significant designation, which aims to make this city in Basilicata a crossroads between the two shores of the Mediterranean and a space for dialogue between European and North African cultures.
A Special Opening Ceremony on March 20, 2026
March 20 marked the opening ceremony of the event, which was meticulously organized by the Italian event agency Unspace, a specialist in immersive cultural experiences.
Starting in the afternoon, representatives from various institutions took the stage at the Teatro Duni, Matera’s historic theater, for the official opening speeches: representatives from the Basilicata region, Moroccan delegations, and European elected officials gathered to celebrate the occasion.
It was at sunset that the city itself became the stage for the event. The Suoni e Architetture— “Sounds and Architecture”—program transformed the historic facades into living instruments: musicians stationed on the balconies and in the window recesses of the tuff buildings performed a score composed especially for the occasion, letting the music echo through the narrow streets and caves. An immersive, almost mystical experience. Beams of light then enveloped the facades in time with the music, revealing the millennia-old textures of the stone from a new perspective.
A spectacular sound-and-light show featuring 850 drones and beams of light
Conceived by Nicola di Meo, artistic director of the Unspace agency, and produced by Allumee—an international drone show company—this show created a series of luminous scenes in the sky above Matera that were strikingly precise and beautiful.
The show’s artistic direction was organized around four symbolic elements, chosen as metaphors for the city’s identity and history: stone, water, roads, and the sky.
Above the ravine, the swarm of drones first formed a massive cave, extending the ones illuminated on the ground by the lasers. Then, they transformed into a school of fish above an intense blue wave: the rebirth of the Gravina River, rising into the sky, alive and pulsating, which has now given way to the ravines. A gigantic compass then took shape, slowly rotating around its central axis, until it pointed south toward the Mediterranean. A nod to Tetouan, located on the other side of this cultural dialogue.
Entire constellations formed above the hill in a majestic dome, representing the stars that have guided sailors for millennia. At the same time, the beams of light gradually came together to point toward the sky.
For the final scene, the swarm of lights formed the Matera 2026 logo: a spiral helix evoking DNA, a sail unfurling, and a perpetual movement toward the sky.
The show was accompanied by a contemplative, cinematic soundtrack, building to an absolutely spectacular finale as the drones dispersed.
Five thousand spectators gathered on the viewing platforms and in the narrow streets of the Sassi marked the moment with a prolonged ovation. The emotion was palpable.
